Costs & Fees
How much does Panama residency cost?
Costs depend on which visa program you qualify for:
- Pensionado Visa: $2,500–4,000 in legal fees. No investment required.
- Reforestation Visa: $6,000–9,000 in legal fees + $100,000 minimum investment.
- Friendly Nations Visa: $5,000–7,000 in legal fees + $200,000 minimum investment.
- Qualified Investor Permit: $8,000–12,000 in legal fees + $300,000 minimum investment (rising to $500,000 in October 2026).
All legal fees include government filings, document apostille coordination, translations, and Panama-side paperwork. We provide a written quote with total costs before engagement — no hourly billing, no surprise fees.
Are there hidden fees I should know about?
No. We use flat-fee pricing for transparency. Beyond legal fees and government filings, the costs you'll incur are predictable:
- Apostille services in your home country ($50-200 per document)
- Certified Spanish translation ($30-50 per page)
- Travel and accommodation for your Panama visit (3-5 days)
- Health certificate from Panama doctor ($80-150)
- Bank account opening fees, if applicable ($0-300 depending on bank)
For real-estate-based visas (QIP, Friendly Nations), closing costs of 5-7% of property value apply but those are part of the property transaction, not the immigration process.
How much does it cost to include my spouse and children?
Dependent fees vary by visa program but are typically much less than a separate application:
- Spouse: $1,500-2,500 per program
- Child under 18: $1,000-1,500 per child
- Adult dependent (18-25): $1,500-2,000 per dependent (requires proof of financial dependence)
- Parents over 65: $1,500-2,500 per parent (with proof of support)
Do I pay upfront or in installments?
For most cases we structure payment in two installments: 50% on engagement (when you sign the service agreement and we begin document gathering) and 50% at filing (when we submit your application to Panama Immigration). The qualifying investment is paid separately when you close on real estate or set up the bank deposit.
Timelines & Process
How long does Panama residency take?
Processing time depends on the visa type:
- QIP: 30-45 days from filing. Total timeline including document gathering: 60-90 days.
- Pensionado: 3-5 months from filing. Total timeline: 4-6 months.
- Friendly Nations: 4-6 months from filing. Total timeline: 5-7 months for temporary residency.
- Reforestation: 6-9 months from filing. Total timeline: 7-10 months due to environmental verification.
How long do I need to be in Panama for the application?
You typically need to be in Panama for 3 to 5 days during the filing phase. During this visit, we accompany you to:
- Real estate closing or bank deposit setup (if applicable)
- Bank account opening
- Panama medical exam for health certificate
- Biometrics at Panama Immigration
- Document filing
You can return home immediately after these are complete. We handle all follow-up locally. You'll need to return briefly when your residency card is ready, or we can ship it via international courier.
What documents do I need from my home country?
Core documents required for all programs:
- Apostilled criminal record from your country of citizenship (or current residence if different) — must be issued within 6 months of filing
- Apostilled birth certificate
- Apostilled marriage certificate (if including spouse)
- Apostilled children's birth certificates (if including dependents)
- Passport copy (all pages, color, certified by your local notary)
- 5 passport-sized photos
- Proof of investment for investment-based visas (wire transfer documentation, source of funds letter)
- Pension verification letter for Pensionado (we provide template)
We send a country-specific checklist with exact instructions on where to obtain each document and how to apostille it.
Can the residency process be done remotely?
Mostly, but not entirely. The document gathering, contract signing, and most coordination is done remotely via email and video calls. However, Panama Immigration requires in-person biometrics (fingerprints and photo) and the signature on the Power of Attorney must be done in front of a Panama notary or with apostille from your country. The medical certificate also requires a brief in-person exam.
Plan for one Panama visit of 3-5 days. We make it as efficient as possible.
Taxes & Financial
Does Panama tax my foreign income?
No. Panama operates a strict territorial tax system. As a Panamanian resident, you only pay income tax on income generated within Panama:
- Work performed in Panama for a Panama employer
- Rental income from Panama property
- Dividends from Panamanian companies
Foreign-source income is not taxed in Panama, including:
- Foreign salaries and wages
- Capital gains from non-Panama investments
- Pensions from foreign countries
- Dividends from foreign companies
Note: Your home-country tax obligations may continue. US citizens, in particular, are taxed on worldwide income regardless of where they live, due to citizenship-based taxation. We coordinate with international tax advisors.
Will I lose my US tax residency by moving to Panama?
The United States is unusual in that it taxes citizens based on citizenship, not residency. As a US citizen, you will continue to file US tax returns regardless of where you live. However, several mechanisms reduce or eliminate the actual tax owed:
- Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (FEIE): Up to ~$130,000 of foreign-earned income excluded from US tax
- Foreign Tax Credit: Credit for taxes paid to Panama (limited because Panama doesn't tax foreign income)
- Foreign Housing Exclusion: Additional exclusion for housing costs
The end result for many US expats in Panama is significant tax savings, but it requires proper structuring. We work with US expat tax specialists for this.
Can I open a Panama bank account as a resident?
Yes, and we help facilitate this. Panama has stricter due diligence requirements than it did historically (post-FATF reforms in 2019), so account opening typically requires:
- Proof of residency status (or proof of pending application)
- Bank reference letters from your existing banks
- Source of funds documentation
- Tax filings from your home country (last 2 years)
- An in-person visit to the bank branch
We work with 3-4 Panama banks that have streamlined processes for our clients: Banco General, Banistmo, Global Bank, and BAC International Bank.
Citizenship & Long-term Status
Can I get a Panama passport eventually?
Yes. After holding permanent residency for 5 years, you become eligible to apply for Panamanian citizenship and a Panama passport. The Panama passport offers:
- Visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 144+ countries
- Full Schengen area access (EU)
- UK, Russia, most of Latin America
- Dual citizenship preserved (you keep your original passport)
The citizenship application requires Spanish-language proficiency, basic Panama history knowledge, and an interview. We provide preparation support for clients on this path.
Can I keep my original citizenship?
Yes. Panama recognizes dual nationality. You do not need to renounce your original citizenship to obtain Panama residency, and even if you later naturalize as Panamanian, your original citizenship remains intact (subject to your home country's dual nationality rules — most Western countries allow this freely).
What happens to my residency if I don't visit Panama for 2 years?
If you don't enter Panama for more than 2 consecutive years, your permanent residency may be subject to review or cancellation. The 2-year rule is interpreted strictly: a single entry stamp every 24 months is sufficient to maintain status.
If you anticipate not being able to visit, we can file a formal request for "ausencia justificada" (justified absence) that protects your status, but it requires documented reasons (medical, professional, family).
Visa Programs & Eligibility
Which Panama residency is best for me?
The answer depends on your nationality, investment capacity, age, and timeline:
- Retirees with pension: Pensionado Visa
- US/Canada/UK/EU citizens with $200K+: Friendly Nations Visa
- High-net-worth with $300K+ and urgency: QIP
- ESG-aligned investors with long horizon: Reforestation
- Citizens of countries not on Friendly Nations list: QIP (only option without nationality restriction)
In a free 30-minute consultation we identify the optimal program for your specific situation in 15 minutes.
Is the Friendly Nations Visa still available?
Yes. The Friendly Nations Visa remains active and is one of the most popular Panama residency programs. It was significantly reformed in 2021 (Executive Decree 197), and the structure now grants temporary residency for 2 years, convertible to permanent. The investment threshold is $200,000 USD in real estate or bank deposit.
Can digital nomads use Panama residency?
Yes, and Panama is one of the best-positioned residency programs for digital nomads:
- No physical presence requirement (visit once every 2 years)
- Foreign income not taxed (territorial system)
- USD economy (no currency risk)
- Strategic time zone for working with US clients
- High-speed internet and modern infrastructure
Panama also has a separate Short-Stay Visa for Remote Workers (9-18 month renewable) for digital nomads not seeking permanent residency. The Friendly Nations Visa is more common for nomads planning longer-term presence.
Do I need to learn Spanish?
Not to obtain residency. The entire residency process can be handled in English with our firm.
For daily life in Panama, English is widely spoken in expat areas (Panama City financial district, Coronado, Boquete) but learning basic Spanish significantly improves your experience outside these areas.
If you eventually pursue Panamanian citizenship (after 5 years of permanent residency), Spanish proficiency is required for the citizenship interview.

What if my application is denied?
Our 99% approval rate is based on rigorous pre-filing review. We don't file cases that won't be approved. However, in the rare case where unforeseen issues arise, we offer:
- Free re-filing if the denial is due to a procedural error on our end
- Discounted re-filing if denial is due to documentation issues you provide
- Appeal coordination if the denial appears administrative
Most "denials" we've seen across the industry are actually requests for additional documentation, not actual denials. We resolve these quickly.
Do you offer payment plans?
Standard payment structure is 50% on engagement, 50% on filing. For larger cases (QIP with multiple dependents, complex Reforestation deals), we can structure 3-installment payment plans. The qualifying investment itself is paid separately to the investment vehicle (real estate seller, bank, reforestation operator) and is not financed through us.
Do you work with real estate brokers?
Yes, but we are not real estate agents. For QIP and Friendly Nations applicants who need to identify a qualifying property, we connect you with vetted independent real estate brokers in Panama City, Coronado, Boquete, and other expat hubs. We do not receive commissions or kickbacks — our recommendations are based on attorney-client interest, not financial incentive.
